Initial training for new adult members
To support you in your first five months of volunteering with the Scouts we have a number of training modules for you to complete. You can complete these in any order.
The below modules except *03 and 04 can be completed as independent learning and validated by successfully completing the online assessment at the end of the module.
*Tools for the Role (Section Leaders) (03) and Tools for the Role (Managers and Supporters) (04) must be validated by a training adviser.
Although not technically a part of Growing Roots learning, First Response must be completed by some people within 12 months of starting a role. Some volunteers will have different timescales if they're in other roles before they move over to the new digital system in their County. South Tyneside District and ourselves run courses so we will notifiy you when they are.
Safety training- You’ll learn about your responsibilities for keeping young people and adults safe, what to do in an emergency and how to report incidents.
Safeguarding training- You’ll learn how to keep young people and adults at risk safe, how to recognise abuse and how to report a concern.
GDPR- You’ll learn how the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) applies to your role, how to treat Personal Data and what are the Individuals’ rights.
Essential Information (01)- The aim of this module is to provide all adults in Scouting with the essential information needed to get started in their role.
Tools for the Role (Section Leaders) (03)- You’ll learn about the roles in your section, and how we use activities and games at Scouts.
When you have completed a module, please send the certificate to our usual email address and we will forward it on for validation. To get module 3 validated please:
Plan and run, or help to run, a section meeting, including one activity or game, and one ceremony.
Meet with your Training Adviser (Mark) to discuss what you did and how it went.

Trustee Board Introduction (only complete if joining trustee board)- You’ll learn about Trustee Boards, our key policies, roles and responsibilities.
Tools for the Role (Managers and Supporters) (04)- You’ll learn about your team's roles and responsibilities, and how to deliver a quality programme.
Ongoing training for adult members
Safety, Safeguarding and First Aid are mandatory ongoing learning for all learners and need to be completed every three years.
Safety training- You’ll learn about your responsibilities for keeping young people and adults safe, what to do in an emergency and how to report incidents.
Safeguarding training- You’ll learn how to keep young people and adults at risk safe, how to recognise abuse and how to report a concern.
First Aid- This module aims to cover the skills and knowledge necessary to enable adults to manage an incident and provide basic first aid.
Training for all appointments- working towards your Wood Badge
When you're working towards completing your Wood Badge everyone with a volunteer appointment should complete the modules on this page. Once you've completed these modules, visit the main training pages to complete modules which are specific to your volunteer role.
Discover Delivering a Quality Programme (12A) Delivering a Quality Programme is a mandatory module for those who are completing a Wood Badge.
Discover The Fundamentals of Scouting (05) The Fundamentals of Scouting is for all adults in Scouting working towards the award of their Wood Badge.
Discover Scouting for All (07) This module is for Section Leaders, Assistant Section Leaders, Managers and Supporters working towards their Wood Badge.
Discover Administration (11) This module is for Section Leaders, Assistant Section Leaders, Managers and Supporters working towards their Wood Badge. It is also for Administrators who wish to undertake further training.
